My Parade series
Sitting in the park in the French concession Shanghai.Full of movements. Tea dances on the pavilion. Huddles of old men bent over fast moving games of Mahjong. Sitting in a bench under the trees a woman approaches.
I see her smile generously. ‘Hello and I pleased to meet you. I am an English teacher’. She wears denim dress and has a red ribbon in her hair. My name is Mary. After Mary after Mary Kay cosmetics. I love Mary Kay – she is my god. Mary Kay makes you beautiful. This is my story: I am trying to find my dream – I have left my village, my husband and my son and come to Shanghai to learn English and work as an English teacher. But I am sad because I think that I have lost my dream.
She carries the address of the Shanghai Mary Kay Company in her purse along with a picture of her husband. She makes a point of approaching westerners when she sees them so that she can practice her English and bring her closer to her dreams of a glamorous life in America.
